About

I am a ceramic artist living and working in Shoreham by Sea on the south coast of the UK.

I primarily make plates, enjoying their flat medium to create my designs. I use red earthenware clay and moulds I have made myself. I have created my palette using stains and oxides to make slips and use paper resist to create the clean, bold shapes and images. A design starts with drawing of something that’s inspired me then pulling out the feeling or essence of what I want to convey. I then do a lot of playing with coloured paper until I have the image I want. I then recreate this on the plate using paper resist method.

I have been making ceramics for over 30 years and I am largely self taught. I used to throw on the wheel and make more functional work but have come to understand I’m more of an illustrator who chooses clay as her medium. My work is designed to be both decorative for wall hanging and also as tableware. The pieces are thin and have a delicate quality to them but are actually pretty robust and I use them every day.

In 2022 I was forced to stop working and close my business as I had become very ill with Long Covid. What ensued has been the biggest teaching experience of my life. As a very active ‘doer’, accepting my body would no longer do was a huge challenge but can now say I am more than 100% recovered because I am a healthier, stronger, happier version of the me ‘before’.

My work has always been informed by my love of nature, particularly birds with whom I feel a deep connection. This grew stronger when I was ill. I loved watching the jackdaws and crows from my bed when getting outside was impossible, delighting in their communities and their clever and bold antics.

As I began to recover I took little walks along the River Adur and the rich and varied array of river birds became a big part of my healing journey. Walking along the river still calms and soothes me when life is hard or overwhelming.

For a long while I felt I would not be able to work again so to have found the key(s) to what became a miraculous recovery and to be back in my studio designing and making new work is something I am profoundly grateful for.

The work available on my website is a mix of old designs and new and I feel more new will emerge in time.

The years of illness changed me and I think in all ways for the better, I no longer push and punish myself, I listen for my body’s cues pretty much in every moment. I will be adding a blog to this website and will explain more about my recovery and healing process for those who might be interested.
To old and new customers… Welcome to my website.
